Transferring UCSM-skills as a German research approach

This workshop is a Tuniso-German cooperation in the DAAD framework for transferring UCSM-skills as a German research approach to Tunisian researchers. It will be held at the Digital Research Centre of Sfax (DRCS). This project brings together two main research initiatives in this field from Germany and Tunisia. On the one side the Research Training Group (RTG) “User-Centred Social Media” (UCSM) (www.ucsm.info) at the Department of Computer Science and Applied Cognitive Science of the University of Duisburg-Essen, The language technology laboratory (www.ltl.uni-due.de) which carries out research in the field of natural language processing and on the other side the Social Media Research Group (SMRG) at the DRCS.

Our main objective is thus to transfer the interdisciplinary experience inside a framework of a scientific project having several commonalities with the UCSM which will facilitate the exchange between young researchers.

For this purpose, we will have this first workshop in Tunisia that mainly aims at introducing the RTG concept and to bring all participants together including the pedagogic, research group working and interdisciplinary aspects. A participation certificate will be provided to the workshop participants.

Sessions

Session 1: Interdisciplinary research approach (4th October 2016)


The Research Training Group "User-Centred Social Media" addresses this need by providing an outstanding interdisciplinary research and qualification environment, located in a university department that fully integrates researchers from computer science and psychology. The research and qualification program provides primarily students with a computer science, information systems and/or a psychology background with the knowledge and methods from these areas required to perform high-quality research and development in Social Media. The development of an interdisciplinary methodology forms a core part of the research program and is being reflected in the individual dissertation themes. The program comprises modular qualification components combined with interdisciplinary team structures as well as supervision and mentoring by internal and external scientists from both fields. The RTG obtains additional support through internal resources and associated researchers and benefits from the University's strong engagement in internationalization and diversity management.

Session 2: APIs/Tools in research development (4th October 2016)

This session aims to present some tools which can be exploited in social content analysis through some examples of thesis projects. Among these tools (non-exhaustive list), we cite:
  • DKPro Core

    DKPro Core provides Apache UIMA (Unstructured Information Management Applications) components wrapping these tools (and some original tools) so they can be used interchangeably in UIMA processing pipelines. DKPro Core builds heavily on uimaFIT which allows for rapid and easy development of NLP processing pipelines, for wrapping existing tools and for creating original UIMA components. DKPro Core addresses tasks that are commonly referred to as linguistic pre-processing, e.g. part-of-speech taggers, parsers, etc. Within DKPro Core, a steadily growing set of third-party tools for such tasks have been wrapped into interoperable and interchangeable components for the Apache UIMA framework. DKPro was created as the Darmstadt Knowledge Processing Repository.
  • FlexTag

    We present FlexTag, a highly flexible PoS (Part of Speech) tagging framework. In contrast to monolithic implementations that can only be retrained but not adapted otherwise, FlexTag enables users to modify the feature space and the classification algorithm. With FlexTag, rapid prototyping of tagger models using different feature spaces can be easily implemented, taking a huge technical burden from the NLP researcher who is experimenting with new ideas or resources. FlexTag makes it easy to quickly develop custom-made taggers exactly fitting a research problem. It is exploited for training a social media model fitted to the Twitter domain that extends the default feature set by adding domain-specific features and incorporating knowledge from unsupervised data resources.
  • WebAnno

    WebAnno is a general purpose web-based annotation tool for a wide range of linguistic annotations including various layers of morphological, syntactical, and semantic annotations. Additionally, custom annotation layers can be defined, allowing WebAnno to be used also for non-linguistic annotation tasks. WebAnno is a multi-user tool supporting different roles such as annotator, curator, and project manager. The progress and quality of annotation projects can be monitored and measured in terms of interannotator agreement. WebAnno is a fully web-based tool which explains the fact that annotators and annotation project managers do not require downloading any software. A modern web-browser is sufficient. After installation on a web-server, all settings can be reached through the browser.
  • WNetSS API

    WNetSS is a java API allowing the use of a wide WordNet-based semantic similarity measures pertaining to different categories including taxonomic-based, features-based and IC-based measures. Determining the Semantic Similarity (SS) between word pairs is an important component in several research fields. It is the first API that allows the extraction of the topological parameters from the WordNet “is a” taxonomy which are used to express the semantics of concepts. Moreover, an evaluation module is proposed to assess the reproducibility of the measures accuracy that can be evaluated and compared according to 10 widely-used benchmarks through the correlations coefficients.

Session 3: Collaborative writing/reviewing papers (5th October 2016)


The goal of this session is to improve the student’s writing skills by organizing a highly interactive and collaborative event that focuses on writing, reviewing and discussing papers. Feedback focuses on positive and constructive suggestions for improvement. In the course of this event, the students will learn about the tools helping them in a collaborative writing and reviewing processes. In addition the discussions among the readers lead to new and helpful ideas that the author can pursue in the future.
